An EPR Scheme for plastic and packaging wastes
Every year, the Maldives generates nearly 22,000 tons of plastic waste, and, due to poor waste management practices, as much as a third of it ends up in our coastal areas. With support from the OIC, adelphi GmbH is helping the Government of the Maldives to put in place a national Extended Producer Responsibility framework that will help the Maldives to close the loop on plastics wastes to reduce ocean pollution.
- Improved waste knowledge base for decision-making
Both Maldives' policymakers and entrepreneurs from its private sector will benefit from an enhanced plastic and packaging waste management knowledge base as decision-support to establishing a regulated waste management system. - Public-private partnerships
The innovators will engage stakeholders from the public sector, private sector, and civil society to improve their understanding of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme to ensure ownership and discuss their roles and responsibilities within it. - Creation of national Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme
It involves the design of an innovation-stimulating EPR scheme for plastic and packaging waste and enables the Ministry of Environment (MoE) to transpose it into national law.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Implications on Small Island Developing States (SIDS): A Guideline for implementation of EPR in SIDS to fight increasing plastic marine litter.
This handbook aims to provide background information on EPR to all stakeholders along the value chain of a product as well as to country policy makers, to highlight the benefits of such a system and different tools for implementation, to show best practice examples as well as to refer to SIDS countries particularly affected by dysfunctional waste management and to provide action instructions and stakeholder implications for efficient implementation.
