Accelerating the artisanal mud crab fishery of the Bons Sinais Estuary

Description

Mozambique's Bons Sinais Estuary supports a vital commercial mud crab fishery, but growing demand threatens this resource. This project introduces a pioneering solution: a hatchery-based restocking program to boost mud crab populations sustainably. The project involves establishing a hatchery, engaging stakeholders to co-fund its operations, and rigorously monitoring outcomes to guide management decisions. This collaborative approach aims to revitalize the crab population and protect incomes for local fishers. It also promotes a model where the industry funds ecological restoration, ensuring long-term sustainability for both the environment and the artisanal fishing community.
