The BlueBOT Project

Description

In the Caribbean, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face vital challenges in protecting their coral reefs, crucial to both the marine ecosystem and coastal economies. Traditional monitoring methods are costly and leave gaps in the data needed for effective policy-making. The BlueBOT Project addresses this with a groundbreaking approach, training underwater robot pilots to provide virtual diving services for tourists. This generates essential data while simultaneously expanding the blue economy with new digital entrepreneurship opportunities. Utilizing robotic technology, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, BlueBOT creates a continuous reef monitoring system and enables Barbados to tap into the vast digital market. This unique solution boosts revenue without increasing physical tourism pressure on the reef. Additionally, it enhances ocean awareness among the population, attracting further blue technology investment.
